BY Peter Holsgrove
’Paradoxides, 2021’ (and associated ‘Trilobita, 2021’) is the first of a series of eight video works (ERC-721) and fictional life forms available on Zien by Joey Holder, each derived from Holder’s Abyssal Seeker solo exhibition that premiered at Seventeen in April 2021 (followed by FUTURA, Prague and British Art Show 9).
Holder draws on the deep sea as metaphor for the limits of human knowledge, creating a mystifying submerged world to project onto rules that may instruct our own. Influenced by its material counterpart, ‘Paradoxides’ is situated at the bottom of a deep sea brine lake inhabiting Holder’s oceanic universe, overlaid with a sigil inspired by ‘The Book of Pleasure: Psychology of Ecstasy’ (1913) by Austin Osman Spare.
The full list of works in the series: Anguilla anguilla, Dactylopteridae, Hydrolagus colliei, Paradoxides (Drop 05), Physalia physalis, Proteus anguinus parkelj, Proteus anguinus, Stomolophus meleagris.
